The Shimshal Pass Trek is an amazing adventure in northern Pakistan. It’s located in a very remote area, and it takes about 3-4 days to get there from Shimshal village. This place is way up in the mountains, about 4,700 meters high. You’d have to travel around 800 kilometers from Islamabad using the Karakoram Highway (KKH) to reach this place.
Local people call Shimshal Pass the “Pamir Pastures” because they use it for about 6 months every year to graze their animals like sheep and yaks. The area is also home to some really tall mountains, like Minglik Sar, which is over 6,000 meters high. These mountains are like a practice ground for people who want to become mountaineers or climbers.
What makes the Shimshal Pass Trek special is the incredible natural beauty. You’ll find lakes and wetlands in the area, and there’s a pretty big lake just below the Minglik Sar Peak, known as Shimshal Pass Lake. One side of the lake has thin grass, and the other side has thicker grass. There’s also Snow Lake, separated from Shimshal Pass by Braldo Pass. On a clear day, you might even be lucky enough to see the Mighty K2 and many other really tall mountains.

The road to Shimshal Valley is very tough and dangerous. It’s about 60 kilometers long and winds along steep mountainsides. The path is narrow, with sharp turns and no safety rails, making it risky to drive on. Only skilled local drivers who know the area well dare to drive on this road. It’s challenging and thrilling but also very risky for anyone traveling on it.

Recommended Equipment Guidelines
It is essential to maintain minimal weight for your equipment. During the trek, your backpack, including your sleeping bag and mattress, should not exceed 15.5 kilograms in weight. This limit is imposed by the porters and is strictly adhered to; your bags will be weighed before commencing the trek. Any items unnecessary for the trek can be safely stored at the group hotel in Islamabad. Please be aware that your mountaineering gear will be consolidated into communal kitbags at the trek’s outset, and this equipment will not be included in your personal weight limit of 12.5 kilograms.
